Richard Perle on the Effectiveness of U.S. Sanctions
A veteran foreign policy practitioner and analyst, Richard Perle, provides insight into the history and current application of sanctions as a tool of U.S.statecraft, after his comments at the April 16, 2015 conference at the Wilson Center titled, "Assessing U.S. Sanctions: Impact, Effectiveness, Consequences," sponsored by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. Do they work? What are the conditions necessary to make them effective? And are we getting it right in the cases of Iran and Russia? Richard Perle is a Resident Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and is a former official and adviser during various Republican administrations. He served as an adviser to the late Sen. Henry Jackson and as Assistant Secretary of Defense during the Reagan administration. He also served as head of the George W. Bush administration's Defense Policy Board.
