Arctic Deep Draft Port Expansion

Project Description

The US Army Corps of Engineers has signed off on a plan to create a Deep Water Basin at the Port of Nome, which would establish the first deep draft port in the US Arctic. The plan calls for demolishing the existing spur breakwater at the end of the causeway, constructing a 3,500-foot-long causeway extension to a depth of approximately 40 ft (MLLW), and expanding the basin in the existing harbor. The project is currently waiting for Congressional authorization through the Water Resources Development Act of 2020.
