After Dilma Rousseff, What Lies Ahead for Brazil?
The suspension of President Dilma Rousseff from office, following a Senate decision to initiate impeachment proceedings against her, will test the resilience of Brazil's democratic institution in the coming months. Her successor, former Vice President and now acting President Michel Temer, has a huge task to assert his leadership and gain legitimacy to govern effectively.
First and foremost, Temer has to show citizens and investors alike his capacity to contain the calamitous economic crisis he inherited from Rousseff and rebuilt lost confidence in Brazil. That was the central message of his first speech to the nation on May 12.
